Prefrontal Cortex Networks Shift from External to Internal Modes during Learning.

چکیده
UNLABELLED As we learn about items in our environment, their neural representations become increasingly enriched with our acquired knowledge. But there is little understanding of how network dynamics and neural processing related to external information changes as it becomes laden with "internal" memories. We sampled spiking and local field potential activity simultaneously from multiple sites in the lateral prefrontal cortex (PFC) and the hippocampus (HPC)-regions critical for sensory associations-of monkeys performing an object paired-associate learning task. We found that in the PFC, evoked potentials to, and neural information about, external sensory stimulation decreased while induced beta-band (∼11-27 Hz) oscillatory power and synchrony associated with "top-down" or internal processing increased. By contrast, the HPC showed little evidence of learning-related changes in either spiking activity or network dynamics. The results suggest that during associative learning, PFC networks shift their resources from external to internal processing. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT As we learn about items in our environment, their representations in our brain become increasingly enriched with our acquired "top-down" knowledge. We found that in the prefrontal cortex, but not the hippocampus, processing of external sensory inputs decreased while internal network dynamics related to top-down processing increased. The results suggest that during learning, prefrontal cortex networks shift their resources from external (sensory) to internal (memory) processing.

Can ovariectomy and learning affect prefrontal cortex GABAAα1 receptor distribution in passive avoidance model in rats?
Introduction: The interaction between steroid hormones and neurotransmitters such as GABA has been proved. The regulation of muscimol binding to high-affinity GABAA receptors by estradiol and progesterone has been studied within distinct brain regions using in vitro quantitative autoradiography. There are few studies about the mechanism of the effect of steroid hormones on behaviors such as ...
متن کاملSignatures of internal model updating during learning in rat prefrontal cortex
Perception and decision rely on internal models of the world. In primary sensory areas of cortex, joint activity of neural populations likely represents the statistical structure of the external environment. Unknown is whether internal neural models are a general computational principle of cortex, extending to learning, higher-order cortices, and actions. We tested that generality by examining ...
متن کاملCinnamaldehyde improves methamphetamine-induced spatial learning and memory deficits and restores ERK signaling in the rat prefrontal cortex
Objective(s): Methamphetamine is a stimulant compound that penetrates readily into the central nervous system. Repeated exposure to methamphetamine leads to damage in the dopaminergic and serotonergic axons of selected brain regions. Previous studies showed that cinnamaldehyde improved memory impairment in animals. In the present study, we aimed to elucidate the effects of cinnamaldehyde on met...
متن کاملThe neural correlates of strategic reading comprehension: Cognitive control and discourse comprehension
Neuroimaging studies of text comprehension conducted thus far have shed little light on the brain mechanisms underlying strategic learning from text. Thus, the present study was designed to answer the question of what brain areas are active during performance of complex reading strategies. Reading comprehension strategies are designed to improve a reader's comprehension of a text. For example, ...
متن کاملTask learning reveals signatures of sample-based internal models in rodent prefrontal cortex
9 The idea that brains use probabilistic internal models of the world is a powerful 10 explanation for a range of behavioural phenomena. Unclear is whether or how neu11 rons represent such models in higher cortical regions, learn them, and use them in 12 behaviour. To address these issues, we sought evidence for the learning of internal 13 models by cortical neurons during a behavioural task. U...
